A man was literally trapped inside his own body for more than a decade. Twelve-year-old Martin Pistorius of South Africa fell ill and was diagnosed with a degenerative illness, leaving him in a vegetative state for twelve years.
Pistorius, the author of a new bestselling book named “Ghost Boy”, says he “woke up” when he was 14 or 15 years old, but everyone thought he was oblivious to the world around him. He even overheard his mother say she wished he was dead, but knew she was just heartbroken seeing her son laying there, silently suffering.
His mom says she’s told him that “I’m very, very sorry I’m said it,” and Pistorius says he even understood at the time it was just an expression of her anguish over his condition.
Pistorius Recovered, Went To College And Wrote A Book About His Experiences
Thanks to the sharp eye of a physical therapist, medical staff at his care facility noted that Pistorius was not vegetative, and began physical therapy. After many long years of “blood, sweat and tears” Pistorius today gets about easily in a wheelchair and communicates with the help of a notebook computer.
Taking his rehabilitation to the final level, Pistorius graduated from college, got married and now has a new book on the New York Times Bestseller List.
