It’s really no shocker that Andrea Reeb, the special prosecutor looking into Alec Baldwin‘s legal accountability in Halyna Hutchins‘ tragic death, has chosen to step down. I mean, she’s a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, too! Talk about a conflict between her roles.
It could’ve been a threat to the legislative process, right? Baldwin’s lawyers were on point when they requested her disqualification, referring to Article III of the New Mexico Constitution.
We’ve gotta give credit to Reeb for her dedication to justice, but it’s pretty clear that having these two jobs was a problem. Baldwin’s legal team made a great point when they said, “future District Attorneys could try to get on the good side of lawmakers controlling their budgets by giving them attention-grabbing cases – messing up the legislative process.” We’re glad Reeb saw the significance of stepping down to avoid this issue.
It’s interesting that Reeb had already taken away a firearms sentencing enhancement against Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the ex-“Rust” armorer. Apparently, the law they were using didn’t even exist when the shooting happened. Baldwin’s lawyers called it “unconstitutional,” so it makes sense that the prosecution dropped it to keep things focused on justice, not on racking up attorney fees.
If he’s found guilty, Baldwin could end up in jail for up to 18 months because of his role in Hutchins’ death. But he’s insisted in court documents that he didn’t actually pull the trigger on the gun that killed her, even though some say he was holding it when the tragedy occurred.
It’s so sad that Hutchins lost her life while working on “Rust,” and we need to make sure justice is done. We all know accidents can happen, but it’s crucial to follow safety rules on movie sets. Let’s hope the new special prosecutor on the case will be unbiased and even-handed, without any conflicts. That’s what the American people deserve, after all.
