Church congregants in Indonesia saved their priest from being slaughtered by a failed ISIS suicide bomber. According to MailOnline, 18-year-old Ivan Armadi Hasugian attempted to detonate a homemade backpack bomb inside St. Joseph Church in Sumatra when it caught fire and wouldn’t go off.
“Somebody tried to kill the priest by pretending to attend the church service and at that time tried to explode something, like a firecracker, but the firecracker didn’t explode, it only fumed,” Chief Detective Nur Fallah told MailOnline.
The terrorist realized that his bomb and failed and turned to his second plan. Hasugian then whipped out an axe from his bag and went after the church’s 60-year-old priest Albert Pandiangan. Though he was able to cut the priest’s arm, congregants were able to prevent Hasugian from seriously injuring and murdering their priest.
“He sat in the same row as I did… I saw him fiddling with something in his jacket, and then I heard a small explosion and he immediately ran to the podium,” eyewitness Markus Harianto Manullan said.
Hasugian was covered in blood at the time of his arrest. Police found his ID card and a hand-drawn picture of the ISI flag in his possession. He told police that he was not working alone.
