Former president Bill Clinton may have just let the cat out of the bag.
Speaking in Atlanta on Wednesday, Clinton, husband of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, admitted the Clinton foundation donors “knew exactly what they were doing.”
“We try to do good things. If there is something wrong with creating jobs and saving lives, I don’t know what it is,” Clinton said. “The people who gave the money knew exactly what they were doing.”
“I saw people were criticizing Hillary for meeting with Elie Wiesel and Muhammad Yunus, two Nobel prize winners,” Clinton added, noting that he believes the scandal is a product of “election season.”
“I feel good about it,” Clinton said.
Clinton has come under heavy fire in recent weeks over the overlapping over her work as secretary of state and her work at the Clinton Foundation, which many have alleged as a conflict of interest.
The Associated Press released a bombshell report earlier this week, which found that “at least 85 of 154 people from private interests who met or had phone conversations scheduled with Clinton while she led the State Department donated to her family charity or pledged commitments to its international programs.”
Those 85 people, the report found, donated more than $150 million to the Clinton Foundation.
“At least 40 donated more than $100,000 each, and 20 gave more than $1 million,” the report stated.
However, the Clinton campaign called into question the validity of the AP’s report, charging that it is “utterly flawed” and the AP “cherrypicked” which data to include in its investigation.
“She was secretary of state. She was meeting with foreign officials and government officials constantly,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Wednesday. “So to pull all of them out of the equation, cherry-pick a handful of meetings, is pretty outrageous.”
Still, Republican nominee Donald Trump is taking full advantage of the scandal.
“It is impossible to figure out where the Clinton Foundation ends and the State Department begins,” he said earlier this week, according to Yahoo News. “It is now abundantly clear that the Clintons set up a business to profit from public office.”
