A man believed a “poetic justice” has been served after he raped, tortured, and killed Richard Huckle, described as “Britain’s worst ever paedophile” who sexually abused 200 children.
Paul Fitzgerald, 30, is accused of murdering Richard Huckle, 33, at HMP Full Sutton, East Yorkshire, in October 2019. Hull Crown Court was told that Huckle was stabbed, assaulted with a blunt instrument, and strangled.
Fitzgerald – a fellow inmate at a high security prison near York in the United Kingdom – beat, stabbed and strangled Huckle to death on Oct 13, 2019.
“HMP Full Sutton prisoner Richard Huckle died on October 13. It would be inappropriate to comment further while a police investigation is ongoing,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said.
Huckle, 33, had been convicted of sexually abusing almost 200 children in Malaysia, and was serving 22 concurrent life sentences for his crimes.
Police were called shortly after 12:30 pm and have launched an investigation into his death, which they are treating as suspicious.
Huckle’s trial at the Old Bailey heard that investigators who checked his computer found more than 20,000 indecent pictures and videos of his assaults.
These were shared with paedophiles worldwide through a hidden website on the so-called dark web.
Huckle, who worked as a freelance photographer, tried to make a business out of his abuse by crowd-funding the release of the images. He was compiling a pedophile’s manual at the time of his arrest in 2014.
At the end of his trial, Judge Peter Rook said Huckle’s sentence reflected the “public abhorrence” over his “campaign of rape”.
He said: “It is very rare indeed that a judge has to sentence sexual offending by one person on such a scale as this.”
Prosecutor Alistair MacDonald said: “The insertion of an object into his anus, and possibly into his brain as well, was, say the prosecution, a form of punishment associated with the offending which had led Mr Huckle to prison.”
“This was a carefully planned and executed attack, in the course of which Mr Huckle had been subjected to a prolonged attack also designed to humiliate and degrade him.”
Fitzgerald admitted afterward wanting to cook and eat parts of Huckle’s body, saying after the attack: “I got carried away by how much fun I was having doing what I was doing to him.”
Sentencing him to life in prison with at least 34 years behind bars, Justice Lavender said: “You are a psychopath and you derive pleasure from fantasising about raping, torturing, killing, and even eating others. On this occasion you derived pleasure from acting out your fantasies.”
The court heard Fitzgerald, who suffers from psychopathy, anti-social personality disorder, and gender identity disorder has previous convictions for violent and sexual offenses, starting from the age of 13 and including the false imprisonment of a female prison officer.
