A renowned actor just dropped a bombshell, confessing that his wild lifestyle during the peak of his fame might have played a part in his devastating neurological disorder.
In a candid interview on CBS Sunday Morning, actor Michael J. Fox made a startling confession about his Parkinson’s Disease, suggesting that his lifestyle during the height of his fame in the 1980s might have contributed to his neurological disorder. The sixty-one-year-old actor, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at age twenty-nine, opened up about his life with the degenerative condition and the possible factors that led to its development.
As Michael J. Fox reminisced about his career during the interview, he recalled a moment when actor Woody Harrelson presented him with an honorary Oscar Award in November 2022.
Fox had joked about how he and Harrelson “did some damage in the ’80s.” Interviewer Jane Pauley followed up on Fox’s comment, asking if it was “possible you did some damage” to his brain during that time.
Although Fox had initially joked about the matter during the award presentation, he admitted to Pauley that his actions during the height of his fame might have contributed to his neurological decline.
Fox stated, “Yeah, very possible. I mean, there are so many ways that you can… that I could’ve hurt myself. I could’ve hit my head. I could’ve drank too much at a certain developmental period.”
Fox acknowledged that his Parkinson’s diagnosis was likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. He has since founded a Parkinson’s disease research foundation dedicated to funding research for a cure or improved treatments for Parkinson’s patients.
“Most likely, I think, that I was exposed to some kind of chemical. What we say is that genetics loads the gun, and environment pulls the trigger,” Fox explained. The Parkinson’s Foundation supports this notion, stating that “scientists believe a combination of genetic and environmental factors are the cause of Parkinson’s disease.”
During the emotional CBS Sunday Morning interview, Fox confessed that life is “getting harder” and he doesn’t expect to live to see eighty years old. “I’m not going to lie. It’s getting hard. It’s getting harder. It’s getting tougher. Every day it is tougher. But that’s the way it is,” Fox said, also mentioning that he has suffered broken bones and undergone spinal surgery.
