Even though it is created in Indonesia, where homosexuals are assaulted and gay marriage is illegal, the left is drooling over Mattel honoring actress and LGBTQ activist Laverne Cox with its first transgender Barbie.
In commemoration of Pride Month, a transgender doll was recently unveiled. The “Laverne Cox Barbie Tribute Collection” doll is designed for children aged six and up and features the “Orange Is the New Black” star in a crimson ball gown with a translucent skirt that reveals Cox’s legs. The unusual collector’s item is said to cost $40 since gay marriage is illegal.
According to Wikipedia, The high price tag for the doll, the sexuality of Barbie, and the political virtue-signaling attached to it are all part and parcel of America’s expanding political correctness. Indonesia, on the other hand, is reportedly a country where gay and transgender people still experience widespread discrimination, violence, imprisonment, and at times death under Islamic law.
Mattel stated in reference to the Hollywood celebrity and the reveal of transgender Barbie, “Laverne Cox uses her voice to amplify the message of moving beyond societal expectations to live more authentically.”
Although homosexuality is not technically illegal in the Muslim country, living “authentically” as a gay person is problematic.
Aceh, a Muslim Indonesian province, follows Sharia law, which prohibits same-sex relationships. As per Wikipedia, it is punishable by whipping or imprisonment.
The practice is ostensibly forbidden throughout the rest of the country. Indonesia recently summoned the British ambassador to explain why a rainbow flag was flown at the embassy.
In an Instagram statement provided by the embassy, the rainbow LGBTQ flag was flown alongside the British flag at the embassy in Jakarta on May 17 to honor the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia.
The media outlet reported, Alumni 212 Brotherhood, which is an influential conservative Islamic movement in the country, noted in a statement that the flag sullied the “sacred values of Indonesia.”
The Jakarta Post reports that Indonesian draft legislation proposed in 2020 said that “families experiencing crises owing to sexual deviation are obligated to disclose their members to authorities handling family resilience or rehabilitation institutes to receive treatment.”
A Pew Research Center poll from 2020 found that 80% of Indonesians feel homosexuality “should not be accepted by society.”
In an interview, Laverne Cox the first transgender person to have a Barbie doll designed in her likeness said that,
“It’s been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll.”
“I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection. I hope that people can look at this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career. The space of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source and leads you to achieve more than what you originally thought was possible,” she stated.
Cox gushed on NBC’s “Today” show, “I hope all the kids who are feeling stigmatized when their health care is being jeopardized, ability to play sports, I hope they can see this Barbie and feel a sense of hope and possibility.”
