An elderly vet suffered a horrific death when his neighbors starving dog attacked him and ate him alive. The two women who owned the dog have been charged and sentenced.
Clifford Clarke, a 79-year-old UK veteran, was killed in his back yard in Liverpool garden when his neighbor’s dog mauled him. According to reports, the dog had been starved by its owners for at least two days, and they left the animal unattended in their yard while they attended a barbecue.
Hayley Sulley, 30, and Della Woods, 29, left the dog, named Charlie, without shade or food on the day of the attack. The dog had also been deprived of water for several hours. He managed to get into Clarke’s yard, and when the elderly gentleman stepped out his back door, Charlie went into hungry predator mode and attacked.
Neighbors heard the screaming and called the police. Clarke was dragged around by the hungry dog, and his arm was completely severed. When police arrived, they shot the dog dead at the scene. The dog was so ravenous he attempted to eat the butt of the gun that killed him. Police also found evidence that he tried to eat a plastic bowl.
Clarke was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to the hospital.
Sulley and Woods were charged and sentenced to 12 months for their part in the preventable death. They’re both also banned from ever owning a dog again.
“I am satisfied this dreadful and forceful attack on Mr. Clarke was entirely avoidable,” said Judge Mark Brown. “Mr. Clarke was literally eaten alive by Charlie when large amounts of tissue were ingested by the dog and that is a very shocking, appalling and tragic event. Mr. Clarke suffered a horrific death and you have taken away from his family the love and companionship he would have provided.”
