With borders reopening and international travel now returning to some semblance of normalcy, we don’t doubt that many travelers are now eager to pack their bags and head off for their next adventure and catch a much-needed break from pandemic-induced stress. However, with that being said, it is always important to keep your wits about you when you’re in a foreign country, as you’ll never know if you’ll wind up falling prey to scams or schemes targeting oblivious tourists!
Just like what happened to a 25-year-old tourist in Bangkok who took to social media seeking help to locate a woman who approached him with a hug on the street and stole his gold chain at the moment.
Frederik de Vreese, who is from Belgium, said the incident happened at the intersection at Sukhumvit Soi 21 in Bangkok, Thailand.
He referred to the thief as a “ladyboy”, a term commonly used to refer to trans women in Thailand.
The Sukhumvit Road area is popular among foreign tourists and ex-pats living in Bangkok and is where several red-light districts are located as well.
In the video, the attractive Thai sex worker throws her arms around de Vreese’s neck and whispers all the things she would let him do to her if he paid the right price. She can be heard saying, “Where you go, honey? I go to your room. I go f*** you.”
Shortly after, he noticed that it was missing from around his neck and immediately reviewed the footage that he had recorded earlier on. It was at that very moment did he see how the woman had expertly worked the closure of his chain open before pickpocketing it from him.
De Vreese said he does not know the woman, according to Daily Mail.
Replying to a comment on his Instagram post, de Vreese explained why he was not more vigilant when approached.
He wrote: “well we drinking and i got approached like this 100 of times and i never had this before…”
The woman had a distinct tattoo on her back and de Vreese hopes to identify this person to get back his gold chain which has sentimental value as it was given to him by his grandfather.
De Vreese has made a police report and investigations are ongoing.
A Bangkok police spokesperson said, “Officers at Lumphini Police Station are now checking CCTV cameras at the scene to speed up the identification of the perpetrators to prosecute them as soon as possible.”
