A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Jim Carrey on Monday.
After the actor’s 30-year-old ex-girlfriend Cathriona White committed suicide in her Los Angeles home last September, her estranged husband has now filed a lawsuit against Carrey blaming him for her death.
In a lawsuit filed in a California Superior Court in Los Angeles County Monday, Mark Burton accuses Carrey of attempting to “conceal and obfuscate his involvement and culpability” in her death. He claims that Carrey obtained prescription painkillers under a fake name and gave them to White.
Burton said that Carrey “wrongfully and illegally” obtained the painkillers that White used to kill herself.
He also claims that Carrey and his assistant failed to notify authorities of a possible overdose even though, he says, they were aware that she had not left her home for “well over a day.”
An autopsy report released last year found four prescription drugs in White’s system: a mix of painkillers, beta blockers and a sleep aid. Three of the prescriptions were prescribed under the name “Arthur King.”
Carrey had texted White the night before she died asking if she knew where his painkillers were, the coroner noted.
Carrey met White in 2012 and dated her for a few months before breaking up, but they had rekindled their relationship in May 2015. The couple reportedly broke up again just days before her death.
