The Democrat mayor of America’s real-life Gotham City, Lori Lightfoot, hasn’t been leading by example.
On Tuesday, Chicago’s Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot was accused of “do as I say, not as I do” hypocrisy amid revelations that some SUVs whisking the mayor around the city have received more tickets for speeding and running red lights that have gone unpaid.
Lightfoot recently angered Chicago residents by lowering the threshold for speed camera tickets from 10 mph to 6 mph. And if Chicago drivers don’t follow her rules, and don’t pay, they can lose their driver’s license.
Yes, the Democrat Mayor, subjected Chicago drivers to speed limits and red-light cameras that automatically send out millions in fines every year.
Meanwhile, Lightfoot’s motorcade reportedly has racked up hundreds of dollars in fines that she has refused to pay — without any consequence at all.
According to reports, Lightfoot’s SUVs have been involved in at least eight incidents since February 2020, and since May 2021 have received three speeding tickets and two warnings, one for a red light violation.
Moreover, several other cars registered to her motorcade also have had fines assessed but never paid, the report said.
CWB Chicago even found that one of the vehicles is now eligible for booting and being impounded because the fines are so far in arrears.
And to make the matter even worst, some tickets were issued in school zones with children present wherein Lightfoot’s SUVs were caught exceeding the speed limit.
According to CWB Chicago, not one of the fines which were collected by Lightfoot’s SUVs since May 2021, totaling $658, has been paid.
This is reflective of a consistent trend with the mayor. A 2020 article in the Chicago Tribune found that since her inauguration in May of 2019, Lightfoot’s protection detail had racked up 13 moving violations, 10 of which were dismissed.
The Democrat mayor’s office released a statement after this latest news claiming that Lightfoot’s motorcade sometimes breaks the law for the mayor’s “safety.”
“The Mayor’s Detail is responsible for the safety and security of Mayor Lightfoot. Members of the Mayor’s Detail are trained in a variety of safety and security techniques to keep the Mayor safe and that includes both vehicles staying in formation while en route,” the statement said, according to CWB Chicago.
The office said fines are often paid late because the tickets go through an “administrative process to review if City vehicles were in use for safety or security reasons.”
Fines are paid after that process, and the detail’s drivers are responsible to pay them, Lightfoot’s office said.
Of course, even as she refuses to pay her traffic fines, the mayor has fought to make sure her constituents aren’t allowed any breaks from paying theirs.
Exhibiting a stupefying lack of self-awareness given the number of murders that take place on any given day in her city, Lightfoot seemed to assert that speeding was the capital and existential threat to life in Chicago, especially for kids.
“It is unconscionable that any City Council member would consider voting to allow for increased speeds near spaces utilized by our children,” Lightfoot said.
