British police arrested five men on Sunday on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism and explosives offenses outside RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force base in western England operated by the U.S. Air Force, according to Headline USA, citing Associated Press reporting. Counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation, and three suspicious vehicles are being searched, the outlet reported.
What RAF Fairford is—and why it matters
RAF Fairford, about 100 miles west of London, is among several U.K. bases used by the U.S. Air Force under an agreement dating to the 1950s, the report said. It houses the headquarters of the USAF’s 501st Combat Support Wing and serves as a forward operating location for Air Force Global Strike Command. Its long runway supports heavy bombers and has been used during major operations including the Gulf War and the 2003 Iraq war, according to the same reporting.

The outlet also stated that Fairford has supported bomber operations during the ongoing Iran conflict, which it described as a “U.S.-Israeli war on Iran” that began Feb. 28.
Use of UK bases in the Iran conflict
Per the report, Britain initially declined President Donald Trump’s request to use U.K. bases to strike Iran. Days later, then–Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had agreed to let the U.S. use bases in Britain for “defensive” operations against Iranian missiles and launch sites after attacks on U.K. interests and Britain’s allies in the Gulf. American B‑1 and B‑52 bombers have flown from Fairford for operations during the Iran conflict, the outlet reported.
Security posture and unanswered questions
Anti-war protesters have demonstrated outside Fairford’s perimeter fence multiple times since the start of the Iran conflict, according to the report. It also said it is unclear whether Sunday’s arrests are linked to that conflict.
British security officials have said proxies linked to Iran are behind a series of arson and sabotage attempts in the U.K. and elsewhere, many targeting the Jewish community, the outlet reported. They have warned Tehran could expand targets in the U.K. if Middle East conflicts continue, according to the same reporting.
Some local residents told the outlet that security around Fairford appeared tighter in recent days, with heavy vehicles positioned across entrance gates. Separately, another U.S.-operated base, RAF Lakenheath in eastern England, confirmed it is at Force Protection Condition Charlie—the U.S. Department of Defense’s second-highest threat level. U.S. military websites state FPCON Charlie “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action targeting personnel or facilities is likely.”
There was no immediate confirmation of the threat level at RAF Fairford. U.S. European Command said it would not discuss “specific force protection measures,” according to the report.
