A man of New York, was jailed for the death of a police officer despite the fact that he did not kill him.

28-year-old James Ryan was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and other charges in the death of the police officer.

Prosecutors in Long Island, said that Ryan was driving drunk when he crashed on the Long Island Expressway. Nassau County police officer Joseph Olivieri responded to the scene to help Ryan.

Another car hit Ryan’s vehicle and then fatally struck Olivieri. Ryan was arrested for the officer’s death even though he wasn’t driving the car that killed the officer.

Madeline Singas, the Nassau County District Attorney, said that Ryan was responsible for the officer’s death because his criminal actions of driving drunk caused the other car to crash and kill the officer.

The driver who hit and killed Officer Olivieri, was giving immunity. Ryan, who is the son of a retired police officer, was sentenced to serve between 4 and 12 years in prison.

Ryan’s lawyers will appeal the sentence.
