A young Canadian woman’s birthday trip to Mexico ends in tragedy as her hockey player boyfriend is arrested in connection with her untimely death.
Kiara Agnew, a 23-year-old bank worker from British Columbia, and her boyfriend Ryan Friesen, a 26-year-old hockey player, had planned the vacation in celebration of Agnew’s birthday. The couple’s dream trip turned into a nightmare when Agnew was found dead at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort in Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun. In a shocking twist, police have since arrested Friesen in connection with her death.
The couple had excitedly boarded their flight to Mexico, with Friesen, who played for the Dawson Creek Canucks, joining his girlfriend in celebrating her birthday. However, their joy was short-lived as tragedy struck when Agnew was discovered dead at the resort. Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the young woman’s apparent murder.
In a somber announcement, the Secretariat of Public Security in Solidaridad revealed they had detained a foreign suspect in connection with Agnew’s murder. Though the image shared by the Secretariat had the suspect’s face blurred, the Canadian government’s Global Affairs department confirmed that Friesen was the one arrested. Charlotte MacLeod, a spokesperson for Global Affairs, shared that officials were assisting the families and staying in contact with local authorities, but no further information could be disclosed due to privacy considerations.
The prosecutors working on the case are based in Quintana Roo, where the hotel is located. They have confirmed the arrest of a foreign individual in connection with Agnew’s death. The young woman had been eagerly anticipating her Mexican vacation with her boyfriend, looking forward to escaping the Canadian winter for the warmer climate. The trip, booked around Christmas time, was meant to be a celebration of her twenty-fourth birthday.
Heartbroken, Agnew’s aunt, Katlyn Levesque, shared with the Toronto Star, “She has been counting down to this trip. It is shocking. We want to know what happened. She was a beautiful, wonderful person inside and out. It’s unfair that she was robbed of her chance to experience life to the fullest.” While Levesque chose not to speculate on her niece’s death, she did confirm that both Agnew’s and Friesen’s families had been in touch, devastated by the tragic news.
According to Levesque, both families are desperate for answers, saying, “They want to find out what happened as much as everybody else.” Before her untimely death, Kiara Agnew worked at the Dawson Creek branch of Lake View Credit Union. In a heartwarming show of support, the bank shared a Facebook post mourning their teammate and friend, expressing their devastation and extending love and faith to others impacted by the tragedy.
Agnew and Friesen‘s relationship lasted for approximately eighteen months before her tragic death in Mexico. This scandalous incident, which began as a birthday celebration, has left two families searching for answers and mourning the loss of a young woman whose life was cut short in the most tragic of circumstances.
