These thugs learned that you don’t mess with the elderly.
Something else you learn about grandparents from an early age is that there’s no point trying to mess with them. You know how it’s going to end. That’s certainly the case if you encounter 77-year-old Winifred Peel from Wirral, UK.
One day, pensioner Winifred went to a cash machine to withdraw some money.
As she stood there, shielding her pin, she noticed someone coming up behind her. Before she had time to act, two men had pulled her off balance. Then, another man appeared.
One reached over to Winifred and tried to withdraw £200 from her account.
That person began to push her and Winifred recognized his face immediately. It was one of the young men that she suspected was from out of town earlier that day.
Little did they know, Winifred goes to the gym religiously — four days a week, to be exact. Unluckily for him, she wouldn’t budge. She stood her ground, refusing to be knocked over.
“It’s not working,” the young man said.
That’s when another one of the robbers reached around and withdrew £200 from the ATM. Using her quick wit, Winifred grabbed him by the collar and banged his head against the machine three times.
Despite her resilience, one of the robbers was able to get the cash and run off. The remaining two robbers were probably shocked by this as it was the last thing they expected from the elderly lady, so they run-off as well.
The CCTV footage recorded at the ATM machine helped the police authorities identify the three robbers. The footage was circulated and the culprits were soon arrested and put in jail.
19-year-old Stoica was sentenced to two years in a young offenders’ institution, 18-year-old was sentenced to 18 months, and 18-year-old Dumitru got eight months.
The source also informed that the bank later refunded Winifred‘s money right away and even sent her flowers.
“I’m pleased they’ve been locked up, or otherwise they would be looking for more people to rob who maybe wouldn’t have been able to look after themselves like I was,” Winifred told the source.
Hearing her story was inspirational for many people. Facebook and social media users even expressed concern for her safety.
“God Bless this Granny! Glad she wasn’t injured and that she got her money back!” Elizabeth Ann Crail wrote on Facebook.
