The Obama administration allowed almost 90,000 undocumented immigrants considered “criminal threats” to be released from federal jails during the past fiscal year, according to the Washington Examiner.
The suspects were turned loose on the streets of the United States, instead of being deported to their own countries, Breitbart News reported. Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, cited statistics that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency compiled. Of 152,393 foreign nationals who faced charges, only 64,116 were accused of immigration-related offenses. ICE declined to pursue deportation procedures for about 88,000 of the suspects.
The Examiner alleged that jails under municipal, county and state jurisdictions also released many possible criminals who had entered the country illegally. Officials reportedly set them free even though federal authorities had asked for them to be detained until deportations could be arranged.
Congressional Republicans have blasted the administration’s policies. Breitbart noted that last summer, GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama said the government was offering undocumented immigrants “a game of Russian roulette.”
He explained: “By defining its priorities to exclude large categories of illegal immigrants, including those who have already been ordered deported or those who illegally reenter after having been deported, (the administration) ensures that countless more dangerous aliens will be released into U.S. communities, allowing otherwise entirely preventable crimes, including some of the most violent and egregious, to occur.”
