A Pew poll conducted in 2015 projects that Muslims will be the fastest-growing religious group, with its members increasing faster than the overall global population. By 2050, the global Muslim population will have increased from 1.6 billion to 2.8 billion.
It was this Fact Tank post that Pew has revealed to be one of its most popular topics of the year:
This year’s deadly attacks by radical Islamic groups sparked a hunger for information about Muslims and Islam, as evidenced by the amount of traffic reaching our posts via Web search.
And the data Pew’s research reveals is staggering:
The reason behind such a huge growth in the Muslim population versus other religious groups has to do with the amount of kids each has. Pew explains:
To begin with, Muslims have more children than members of the seven other major religious groups analyzed in the study. Each Muslim woman has an average of 3.1 children, significantly above the next-highest group (Christians at 2.7) and the average of all non-Muslims (2.3). In all major regions where there is a sizable Muslim population, Muslim fertility exceeds non-Muslim fertility.
The organization also found other staggering statistics this year: In America, only 14 percent of children live in a home where it’s the parents’ first marriage and the mom stays at home while the dad works. The data shows that Asian children are the “most likely” to live under these conditions.
Yet more kids now than ever, 26%, live in a single-parent household. For blacks, it’s much higher at 54 percent.
So, it’s apparent that Muslims are winning in two major categories as we head into 2016: growing big families and terrorism.
Happy New Year!
