There are those who seek bigger and rarer games to hunt, as the thrill of shooting deer or elk simply doesn’t satisfy them anymore. It’s like an addiction, requiring larger and more elusive prey to achieve that initial excitement they experienced when they first hunted an animal. This desire to hunt led an American woman on a safari in South Africa to shoot and kill an incredibly rare and endangered black giraffe, all because she thought a picture with it would look “cool” on her social media page.
This is the case of an American trophy hunter, Tessa Thompson Talley known for targeting and killing controversial or rare animals, proudly sharing her photos with the public online.
On her recent South African hunting expedition, she joined a group aiming to shoot and kill as many big game animals as possible. Throughout the trip, she killed numerous creatures and posed with their lifeless bodies. Among the many photos, one image, in particular, sparked an intense backlash – the one with the black giraffe.
Some of the outraged comments included, “Tess Thompson Talley… may Karma be swift and merciless to you.” The image displayed Talley holding the limp neck of the magnificent creature, which was extremely rare and over eight years old.
Talley captioned the controversial photo: “Prayers for my once in a lifetime Dream hunt came true today! Spotted this rare black giraffe bull and stalked him for quite a while. I knew it was the one. He was over 18 years old, 4,000 lbs and was blessed to be able to get 2,000 lbs of meat from him.”
When African Digest caught wind of Talley’s photos, they shared them with their animal rights followers on Twitter, writing, “White American savage who is partly a Neanderthal comes to Africa and shoot down a very rare black giraffe courtesy of South Africa stupidity.”
One Twitter user responded to the post, saying, “Tess Thompson Talley. May you suffer guilt, torment, and loneliness from your mental illness. Shame on you.”
African Digest further added, “Her name is Tess Thompson Talley. Please share. If our so-called governments can’t care for our wildlife, then it’s time we stand up and take responsibility for our continent, lands, resources, and wildlife… Let’s have a united voice against the pillage of Africa. It’s the only home we have.”
Talley, a hunter from Texas, killed an animal on the brink of extinction. When confronted about her actions, she made her account private to avoid controversy and to prevent people from commenting on her photos.
As trophy hunters visit South Africa, the country’s beautiful wildlife continues to diminish with each kill. Following the infamous killing of Cecil the Lion by an American dentist, other African countries have banned trophy hunting. Meanwhile, Australia and France have prohibited the import of lion trophies.
