Earth has many strange occurrences. For as much we know about our world, we actually know very little. When you stop and consider that only 5% of our worlds oceans have been explored, it helps put how little we know into perspective. We actually know more about space than we do our oceans. Part of the fun of living however, if figuring these things out. It’s always extremely exciting when we learn something new about our planet. That’s why scientists are celebrating a win, because they have finally solved a mystery that has been eating at them for a years! It involves a mysterious cater that appeared in Russia multiple years ago. Check out what happened and how scientists have finally been able to explain it.
In 2014, a mysterious hole in the ground appeared in the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia, Russia.
People in the area were asleep in their beds when they describe hearing rumblings. Many of them ventured outside the next morning to find the massive crater.
Farmers in the area described the sound like a clap of extremely loud thunder.
They say they’ve never seen anything like it. It literally just appeared overnight.
Many conspiracy theorists hypothesized anything from secret government weapons testing to aliens.
Geologists have been researching what could have caused this massive hole, and they have finally got it!
Scientists have concluded that this whole mess was caused by something called a pingo.
A pingo is a core of ice that is located directly under the surface of a pice of land.
Half of the ice core is filled with gas. This causes a problem because as the ice thaws, pressure builds until it finally erupts in an amazing display.
The majority of these giant holes end up filling with water and forming lakes.
Luckily this one hasn’t filled in yet and scientists aren’t quite sure why. It does however give them a chance to get an up close and personal look at these mystery craters and hopefully yield some fascinating results.
