Sports Illustrated is known for pushing boundaries, and its Swimsuit Edition is no exception. In their last edition, they featured attractive Muslim models wearing “burkinis” – swimwear that was banned in public pools and beaches in France. But the magazine felt it was important to showcase the diversity, and now they’re ready to break new boundaries again.
In 2017, 63-year-old Christie Brinkley posed in a bikini alongside her daughters Alexa Ray Joel, 31, and Sailor Brinkley Cook, who was 18 at the time. Her appearance in the magazine made her the oldest woman to pose for the Swimsuit Edition.
Now, Jodi Harrison-Bauer, who is 58 years old, hopes to break another record and become the oldest woman chosen from an open casting call for the magazine. This is no small feat, as the beauty and sports industry is known for its bias towards younger talent.
Jodi, who runs a fitness gym in Connecticut, realized that the open casting call didn’t list any specific age requirements. She saw an opportunity to challenge industry norms and put herself out there.
Although Jodi is approaching her sixties, she feels much younger. She’s a two-time champion of Fitness America and Fitness Universe, and she continues to push her body to the limit every day. She believes in balance and maintains a low-carb diet while getting plenty of rest.
“I’m doing this as another way to share who I am and encourage others along the way that it’s not too late to try something new,” Jodi told the New Haven Register.
She flew from Connecticut to Miami for a 5 am casting call, where she hopes to stand out among dozens of other bikini-clad women. She refuses to be intimidated by younger women, who are three or four decades her junior.
“I want to get my message out to all ages, but especially women over 50, to ignore expectations by being bold and stepping out of your comfort zone,” Jodi said. “I don’t know how this next chapter will read, but competing for inclusion in this swimsuit issue is another way of showing that age limits are something we impose on ourselves.”
Jodi hopes to be selected for many reasons, but mainly, she wants to show that no woman should ever be boxed in. She’s confident and determined to break barriers and encourage women of all ages to pursue their dreams.
In a world that often values youth over experience, Jodi’s story serves as a reminder that age is just a number. She’s an inspiration to women everywhere and a testament to the fact that it’s never too late to try something new.
